Additional information

John III of Brabant struck this English-type half groat during a period of intense economic entanglement between the Low Countries and England — Edward III was actively courting Flemish and Brabantine support ahead of the Hundred Years' War, and English sterling penny designs circulating in the region created both demand and political logic for local imitations struck to compatible weight standards. The type borrows its form from English sterlings to ease acceptance across a trade corridor where English coin already had strong commercial currency.
