Additional information

Philip II acquired the Lordship of the Spanish Netherlands through inheritance in 1556, but his rule over Brabant grew increasingly contested as the Dutch Revolt ground on. The addition of Portuguese arms to this type followed his seizure of the Portuguese crown in 1580 — a union enforced at Lisbon by the Duke of Alba with an army, not a negotiating table. By the time this series closed in 1598, Philip had ceded the Netherlands to his daughter Isabella and her husband Albert as the Archduchy, ending direct Spanish administration of the province.
