Obverse description Central field occupied by the crowned royal arms of France, semé of fleurs-de-lis, set within a beaded inner circle. The shield is surmounted by an ornate floral crown typical of late Gothic coinage. The circumferential Latin legend, separated from the central device by a beaded border, reads KAROLVS DEI GRA FRANCORVM REX, identifying Charles VIII as King of France by the grace of God. The overall design reflects the refined Gothic hammered style characteristic of late 15th-century French royal gold coinage.
