Obverse description Central field occupied by the della Rovere dynastic shield, of decagonal form, bearing the family's oak tree device (rovere) in low relief. The shield is surmounted by a ducal crown and flanked by elaborate mantling. The peripheral legend, separated from the central device by a beaded inner border, reads in abbreviated Latin identifying the ruler and his title. The overall execution is characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century Italian hammered coinage, with an irregular flan and bold, if somewhat worn, die work.
