Obverse description Central shield bearing the Este eagle displayed, wings spread, set within an elaborately scrolled cartouche with foliate ornamental frame. The eagle faces the viewer with head turned slightly to the right, rendered in high relief typical of hammered coinage. The surrounding circular legend in Latin reads FRAN • ESTEN • MAR • MASSE, referencing Francesco d'Este, Marquis of Massa. The field around the cartouche is flat and irregular, consistent with hand-struck production of the mid-sixteenth century.
