| Obverse description | Draped and armoured bust of Frederick II (the Great) in right profile, wearing a cuirass over a lace cravat with flowing mantle, his hair dressed in loose curls in the Baroque manner. The effigy is rendered in high relief with fine detail in the articulation of the armour and drapery. The circumferential Latin legend reads FRIDERICVS BORVSSORVM REX, separated from the milled border by a narrow flat rim. The overall composition is characteristic of the early Frederician gold coinage, displaying a vigorous and naturalistic portrait style. |
