Trial pieces — essais — from the Monnaie de Paris were a formal part of French and French-affiliated minting procedure, produced in small quantities for official inspection and approval before a type entered circulation. Monaco's essais from this period were typically struck in editions of around 500 pieces, distributed largely to collectors through official channels rather than tested in any practical sense. This particular piece predates the circulating half-franc by design review, not by accident.
