Louis-Philippe's government undertook a sweeping recoinage of French silver in 1831, retiring the older laureate types and standardizing the portrait series across denominations. The half franc was among the lowest practical silver units in daily use, and these pieces circulated heavily through provincial markets and small commerce — which explains why survivors in better condition are consistently harder to find than the mintage figures alone would suggest.
Fifteen different mint facilities struck this type across its run, each identifiable by a mint mark below the effigy. The Strasbourg mint, operating under severe staff shortages in the early 1840s, produced some of the weakest-struck examples in the series.
