| Reverse description | A cross pattée occupies the central field, dividing the design into four quarters. In each quarter, one element of the Greek Christogram IC XC NI KA is inscribed, reading respectively Iota-Chi (IC), Chi-Omicron (XC), Nu-Iota (NI), and Kappa-Alpha (KA), forming the acclamation 'Jesus Christ conquers' (Iesus Christos Nika). The design reflects the strong Byzantine ecclesiastical influence prevalent in Norman Sicilian coinage of the early 12th century. |
