Obverse description Latin legend arranged circumferentially around a solid inner circle, within which a two-line Latin inscription appears in the field, with a pellet above the text. The lettering identifies the mint city of Messina and names the issuing monarch as King William II. The style is characteristic of Norman-Sicilian hammered bronze coinage, with an irregular flan and somewhat crude but legible execution.
