Reverse description The reverse displays a frontal bust of the Virgin Mary (Mater Dei) in Byzantine style, nimbed and draped, with arms partially raised in an orans gesture. Flanking the figure are the Greek abbreviations MP and OY (contracted form of ΜΗΤΗΡ ΘΕΟΥ, Mother of God), placed to the left and right of the bust respectively. The design is enclosed within a beaded or rope-pattern border and reflects the strong Italo-Byzantine artistic influence prevalent in Norman Sicilian coinage under William I. The copper flan shows characteristic green patination and surface irregularity consistent with hammered production.
