| Obverse lettering | Holzgutschein der Stadt Bad Wildungen Serie A No.215 Gegen diesen Gutschein liefert die Stadt Bad Wildungen 1/2 Fm. Buchennutzholz mittlerer Güte. Holzgutscheine der Serie A, verlieren am 31. Dez. 1923, mittags 12 Uhr, ihre Gültigkeit. Der Gemeindevorstand kann die Gutscheine der Serie A auch innerhalb der Geltungdauer mit einwöchiger Frist zur Auflösung aufrufen. Die Scheine verlieren dann am letzten Tage der Frist ihre Gültigkeit. Der Gemeindevorstand kann bestimmen, dass die Einlösung statt Holz in Gold beliebiger Währung erfolgt. Der Fm. Bad Wildungen's 1923 Buchenholz ("beechwood") notgeld belongs to a short-lived and genuinely odd subgenre of German inflation-era emergency money — Rohstoffwertscheine, scrip denominated not in marks but in quantities of raw material. With the Reichsmark collapsing by the hour in late 1923, some municipalities tied their local currency to tangible commodities — firewood, rye, coal — as an improvised hedge. Half a Festmeter of beechwood was a real, measurable thing when a trillion-mark note was not.
Paul Pusch was a local printer, not a specialist security firm, which accounts for the relatively simple production. The Gemeindevorstand issued it under municipal rather than banking authority.
