Additional information

Moulay al-Hasan I pursued an aggressive minting modernization program in the early 1880s, contracting the Paris Mint to produce struck coinage as part of broader efforts to rationalize Moroccan finances against mounting European commercial pressure. These small bronze fractionals were among the lowest denominations in that reformed series, circulating in a monetary system that still ran parallel to a much older tradition of cast and hammered coinage. The transition was uneven, and many rural markets continued operating in pre-reform pieces long after these were officially current.

Al-Hasan died in 1894, and the political instability following his death accelerated the erosion of Moroccan fiscal independence that culminated in the 1912 French protectorate.
