Baj Bahadur's reign over Malwa ended abruptly in 1561 when Akbar's general Adham Khan swept through the sultanate with a Mughal army, forcing the sultan into a prolonged flight across Rajputana that lasted the better part of a decade. This coin occupies that contested interregnum — struck under a ruler who had lost his capital but not yet formally submitted, during years when Malwa had no stable administration and no fixed mint.
Baj Bahadur eventually surrendered to Akbar in 1570 and spent his remaining years as a Mughal noble, remembered less for governance than for his association with the singer Rupmati.
