Obverse description Central ornate floral cross composed of stylized fleurs-de-lis and scrolling foliate elements, with a small rosette at the center, all set within a plain inner field. The cross arms terminate in elaborate floral sprays, lending the design a highly decorative, late Renaissance character. The circular Latin legend reads CAROL GONZ D NIVERN ET RETH, referring to Charles I Gonzaga, Duke of Nevers and Rethel, and is separated by pellet stops. The coin's edge features a cable or beaded border.
