Obverse description Central device features the crowned royal arms of France and Navarre, quartered with fleurs-de-lis and the lion of Navarre, displayed on a pointed (accolated) shield flanked by two branches of palm and laurel. The shield is surmounted by the large royal crown of France with elaborate fleur-de-lis finials. The surrounding legend reads .LVD.XIIII.D.G. FR.ET.NAV.REX., identifying Louis XIV as King of France and Navarre by the Grace of God. The coin's border is composed of fine milled denticles, and the overall engraving style is characteristic of the late Louis XIV period, with bold relief and sharp heraldic detail.
