| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of Louis XIII facing right, rendered in the bold classical style engraved by Jean Warin. The king is depicted with long flowing hair beneath an elaborate laurel wreath, wearing a cuirass partially draped with a mantle. The effigy occupies the majority of the coin's field, with fine detail in the facial features and drapery. The circular Latin legend surrounds the portrait, separated from the milled border by a raised inner rim. The portrait reflects the idealized Roman imperial style fashionable in French royal coinage of the mid-17th century. |
