| Obverse description | Stylized frontal effigy of the deity Kali rendered in a schematic, archaic manner typical of South Indian coinage of the period. The figure is depicted with outstretched arms terminating in claw-like projections, a broad face with prominent features, and a row of pellets across the torso suggesting a necklace or ritual ornament. The design occupies the full field of the flan in a bold, primitive artistic style characteristic of Dutch India cast coinage from Negapatnam. |

Negapatnam — the VOC's principal settlement on the Coromandel Coast — minted these small-denomination pieces primarily for local bazaar trade, where Dutch currency had to compete directly with indigenous cowrie shells and Mughal copper. The settlement itself was seized from the Dutch by the British in 1781 and never returned, ending over a century of VOC coinage production at the mint.
