Obverse description Central field occupied by the East India Company bale mark, a stylised merchant's mark comprising the letters 'GC' (or 'CC') above a horizontal dividing line, with the letter 'E' below, the whole device rendered in bold raised relief within an unadorned round flan. The bale mark serves as the principal identifying emblem of the Governor and Company of Merchants of London trading into the East Indies. The design is stark and functional, with no border or peripheral legend, consistent with the utilitarian character of Presidency copper coinage.
