Additional information

Johann Ernst von Thun ruled Salzburg from 1687 until his death in 1709, presiding over one of the archbishopric's most architecturally ambitious periods — he commissioned Fischer von Erlach for multiple building projects and ran the treasury accordingly thin. The Salzburg mint operated continuously through his reign, producing ducats and half ducats in .986 fine gold at a standard that had remained essentially unchanged since the mid-sixteenth century.

The Zöttl reference spans five varieties across this type, distinguished primarily by die differences in the date presentation and minor heraldic details rather than compositional or weight deviation.
