Obverse description Right-facing bust of Ulysses S. Grant rendered in bold high relief, depicting the general and former president in military uniform with a cravat at the throat. The name ULYSSES S. GRANT is divided across the field to either side of the portrait, with a small five-pointed star positioned to the right. The commemorative centennial dates 1822 and 1922 flank the base of the truncation, while the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA curves along the upper periphery and HALF DOLLAR arcs along the lower border. The portrait, sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser, conveys a strong and naturalistic likeness in the American commemorative tradition.
