Obverse description Left-facing bust effigy of Sir Walter Raleigh, depicted in Elizabethan attire with a ruffled collar, occupying the central field. The surrounding legend reads UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM, with LIBERTY and the date 1937 also inscribed. The name SIR WALTER RALEIGH appears below the portrait, and HALF DOLLAR is placed at the bottom of the field. Raleigh is presented in a dignified Renaissance style appropriate to his role as the principal sponsor of the English colonization effort, having received his charter from Queen Elizabeth I.
