Obverse description The obverse depicts Roger Williams arriving by canoe, holding a Bible, and being greeted by a standing Native American on the shore who extends his hand in welcome. A stylized rising sun, symbolizing religious liberty, radiates in the upper field behind the figures. The dual dates 1636 and 1936 appear in the legend, commemorating the tercentenary of Rhode Island's founding. The word LIBERTY is inscribed along the lower border, while IN GOD WE TRUST and RHODE ISLAND arc around the upper field. The composition is rendered in a bold, Art Deco relief characteristic of American commemorative coinage of the period.
