Obverse description Full-length figure of John Pell, the original purchaser of the land on which New Rochelle was founded, standing in the field holding a staff, with a calf at his side. The design, sculpted by Gertrude K. Lathrop, is rendered in high relief with the figures centrally positioned. The initials GKL appear in the lower field. A circular legend surrounds the design reading SETTLED 1688 INCORPORATED 1899 above and NEW ROCHELLE NEW YORK below.
