Obverse description A full-length figure of a wounded military veteran in combat fatigues and boots advances on forearm crutches, the left leg amputated at the thigh. Negative space beneath the figure renders the absent limb in silhouette, creating a powerful visual metaphor for sacrifice. The Purple Heart medal is depicted in relief behind the central figure. The legend IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY appear in the field alongside the motto ALL GAVE SOME, with the date 2022 completing the obverse inscription.

Additional information

Congress authorized this coin under Public Law 116-178, signed in 2020, specifically to support the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in New Windsor, New York — the only facility in the United States dedicated exclusively to recipients of the Purple Heart medal. A surcharge of $5 per coin was directed to the Hall to fund its operations and educational programs. The clad half dollar denomination was assigned rather than a silver dollar, which limited both the price point and the surcharge revenue compared to higher-denomination commemoratives in the same cycle.
