Additional information

Missouri's centennial fell in 1921, and Congress authorized this commemorative as part of a broader celebration of the state's admission to the Union in 1821. Two varieties were struck: the plain KM#149.1 and a "2★4" overprint version (KM#149.2) referencing Missouri's entry as the 24th state. The distinction matters enormously to collectors — the 2★4 pieces saw a mintage of only 5,000 against the plain variety's 29,600, and both figures are modest even by commemorative standards.

Distribution was handled locally at the centennial exposition rather than through normal banking channels, which kept many pieces out of circulation entirely.
