| Obverse description | Left-facing truncated bust of President John F. Kennedy, after the portrait by Gilroy Roberts, occupies the central field. The legend LIBERTY arcs along the upper rim, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST divided across the lower field on either side of the truncation. The dual commemorative date 1776 · 1976 appears in large numerals along the lower rim, marking the American Bicentennial. The mint mark, when present, appears below the dot between the two dates. The design faithfully reproduces Roberts's original 1964 high-relief portrait style. |

| Reverse description | A frontal view of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, designed by Seth Huntington, dominates the central field, rendered in fine architectural detail with its distinctive steeple and clock tower. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA curves along the upper rim, while HALF DOLLAR arcs along the lower rim above a row of thirteen small five-pointed stars. The inscription 200 YEARS OF FREEDOM appears to the left of the building, and E PLURIBUS UNUM to the right, with the engraver's initials SGH incused in small letters at the lower right of the building. The overall composition was selected through a national design competition to commemorate the 200th anniversary of American independence. |
