| Reverse description | Central depiction of Pope John Paul II standing in three-quarter view to the left, wearing papal vestments and holding a pastoral staff, with a representation of the ancient ruins of Carthage (Carthagina) to his left. The inscription 'TUNISIA' arcs along the upper periphery, with 'CARTHAGINA' in the left field adjacent to the architectural motif. A banner in the lower field records the papal visit date '14.04.' and the Pope's age at the time '(70)', alongside the year '1996'. The legend 'JOHN PAUL II - PAPAL VISITS' appears along the lower periphery. |

Niue has issued commemorative silver under its own authority since the 1980s, using New Zealand's currency framework to produce coins that circulate legally but are bought almost entirely by collectors abroad. This piece marks John Paul II's 1983 pastoral visit to Tunisia — a historically notable stop, as it made him one of the first popes to enter a mosque, visiting the Zitouna Mosque in Tunis alongside President Bourguiba.
