| Obverse description | Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara and a drop earring, as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The portrait is rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished field. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the left rim and SOLOMON ISLANDS along the upper right, with HALF DOLLAR continuing along the lower right. The engraver's initials IRB appear below the truncation, and the date 2020 is inscribed at the bottom of the field. |

Apollo 13 launched in April 1970 and became famous not for success but for the oxygen tank rupture that turned a lunar landing mission into a survival exercise. The crew made it back using the lunar module as a lifeboat — a procedure that had never been tested under actual emergency conditions. This commemorative was issued fifty years after the mission.
