Obverse description Right-facing bust of Phineas Taylor Barnum, the celebrated American showman, rendered in high relief with a bold, naturalistic style characteristic of 1930s American commemorative coinage. The effigy occupies the central field, with Barnum's name and dates inscribed below in the exergue: P. T. BARNUM / 1836–1936. The surrounding legend reads BRIDGEPORT · CONNECTICUT · CENTENNIAL, arcing along the upper periphery.
