Obverse description Facing right draped bust of Booker T. Washington, educator and statesman, occupying the central field with strong sculptural relief. The date and denomination HALF DOLLAR appear to the left of the portrait, with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM inscribed to the right. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper periphery, while BOOKER T. WASHINGTON curves along the lower rim. The portrait, executed by engraver Isaac Scott Hathaway, conveys a dignified and naturalistic likeness.

Reverse description The upper half of the reverse features a frontal view of the Hall of Fame for Great Americans at New York University (now Bronx Community College), depicted as a neoclassical colonnaded building surmounted by a dome. Below it, centered in the field, is the two-line inscription FROM SLAVE CABIN / TO HALL OF FAME. In the lower field, a small log cabin — symbolizing Washington's humble birthplace in Franklin County, Virginia — is flanked by IN GOD WE TRUST to the left and FRANKLIN COUNTY VA. to the right. The legend BOOKER T. WASHINGTON BIRTHPLACE MEMORIAL arcs along the upper periphery, and LIBERTY flanked by two stars appears along the lower rim.
