Obverse description Draped bust of Liberty facing left, centered within a ring of raised dots forming an inner border. The legend E · PLURIBUS · UNUM arcs along the upper rim, flanked by a series of stars, while the date 1877 appears at the lower rim. The word LIBERTY is incorporated into the design, consistent with Morgan's neoclassical artistic style. The overall composition reflects the experimental character of the 1877 pattern coinage program.
