Obverse description Central field occupied by a square cartouche formed by incuse ruled lines, enclosing a multi-line Arabic religious legend in Maghribi script. The shahada or profession of faith is distributed across several horizontal registers within the cartouche. A marginal Arabic inscription runs around the periphery of the irregular flan, partially off-flan due to the hammered technique. The overall style is characteristic of Saadian coinage, with bold, thick letterforms and minimal decorative ornament.
