Obverse description Left-facing crowned effigy of King George VI, engraved by Percy Metcalfe, occupies the central field. The king is depicted bare-necked with a Tudor crown surmounting his head. The surrounding legend reads GEORGE VI KING EMPEROR, distributed along the upper and lower periphery within a fine beaded border.

Reverse description Central design features the crowned shield of Southern Rhodesia, divided quarterly: the upper dexter quarter bears a passant lion, the upper sinister and lower quarters display floral and foliate motifs characteristic of the territorial arms. The royal cypher GVI RI appears to the left and right of the shield respectively. Two supporting sable supporters flank the shield. The legend SOUTHERN · 1947 · RHODESIA arcs around the upper periphery, while · HALF CROWN · arcs along the lower periphery, all within a beaded border.
