Additional information

The "Little Ships" were the roughly 850 civilian vessels — fishing boats, pleasure cruisers, paddle steamers — requisitioned or volunteered in late May and early June 1940 to ferry troops from the Dunkirk beaches to larger naval vessels offshore. Operation Dynamo ultimately evacuated over 338,000 Allied soldiers in nine days, a figure that exceeded British military planners' most optimistic projections by a factor of nearly seven.

Gibraltar's half crown denomination is a deliberate nod to pre-decimal British coinage, kept alive here long after it vanished from UK circulation in 1970.
