This piece was struck to mark the millennial anniversary of Leif Eriksson's voyage to North America — an event dated by most scholars to around 997–1000 AD, predating Columbus by roughly five centuries. The Pobjoy Mint, operating as a private facility in Surrey, produced coins for the Isle of Man and numerous smaller territories throughout the late twentieth century, often targeting the collector market with fine silver issues tied to historical commemoratives. The .9999 fineness is notably purer than the .925 sterling standard historically associated with British coinage.
