The Isle of Man's annual cat coin program, running since 1988, became one of the few bullion-adjacent series where collector demand consistently outpaced face-value economics. The Bengal featured in the 2002 issue had only been granted full championship status by the International Cat Association in 1991 — still a relatively new pedigree breed at the time of striking. Pobjoy Mint, which produced the series, kept mintages deliberately low across the program, and gold issues in particular were struck in limited numbers without published figures, which complicates population census work on this type.
