Additional information

The Battle of the Atlantic ran from September 1939 until Germany's surrender in May 1945 — the longest continuous military campaign of the Second World War. Gibraltar's role was not peripheral: the strait was a critical chokepoint for Allied convoy routing, and the Rock's naval base served as a key staging and repair facility for escort vessels throughout the campaign. Over 3,500 Allied merchant ships were lost to U-boat action over those six years.

KM# 1650 is part of Gibraltar's extended commemorative program marking the 75th anniversary of key WWII engagements.
