Additional information

The Kronenthaler series was introduced in the Austrian Netherlands as a deliberate response to the chronic shortage of large silver trade coinage circulating in the southern provinces. Maria Theresa's government — Franz I held the imperial title but the Netherlands were administered under her authority — pushed these issues partly to compete with the French écu in cross-border Flemish commerce.

KM#20 spans a decade of the Seven Years' War, during which the Austrian Netherlands remained relatively stable compared to the empire's eastern theatres. Surviving examples in problem-free condition are less common than the long date range suggests; wartime requisitioning and melting took a measurable toll on the regional silver supply.
