Obverse description Right-facing effigy of President Jacobus Johannes Fouché, rendered in high relief with fine portrait detail. The legend reads 'SUID-AFRIKA' and 'SOUTH AFRICA' in bilingual form around the periphery, with the date '1976' positioned below the portrait. The engraver's initials 'J.B.' appear in the field, attributing the design to Jean Baptiste Buisset. The overall composition reflects the formal presidential portrait style characteristic of South African commemorative issues of the period.

Additional information

Fouché served as State President of South Africa from 1968 to 1975, making this 1976 issue a posthumous honor — he died in September 1976, the same year the coin was released. The half cent denomination was already economically marginal by this point, with the South African Reserve Bank under consistent pressure to abandon the lowest bronze coins as production costs edged toward face value.
