Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of Liberty wearing a tiara inscribed LIBERTY, with braided hair coiled into a bun and curly locks falling below the neck truncation. Thirteen stars are arranged in a ring around the central effigy, and the date 1856 appears in the exergue at the bottom of the field. The design follows the Braided Hair type engraved by Christian Gobrecht and is consistent with the regular half cent coinage of the period.
