Obverse description Right-facing bust of Jan van Riebeeck (1619–1677), Dutch colonial administrator and founder of the Cape Colony settlement, rendered in high relief. The designer's initials W.M. appear below the truncation. A bilingual patriotic legend encircles the field, reading in Afrikaans and English respectively, separated by ornamental stops, expressing the national motto.
