Sierra Leone gained independence from Britain in April 1961, and the 1964 coinage series — including this half cent — was among the first national issues produced for the new republic. The silver composition here is unusual: a fractional cent denomination in sterling silver is an almost perverse economic mismatch, suggesting this piece was struck for presentation or specimen purposes rather than genuine circulation use.
