Obverse description Central field displays a stylized Gothic castle with three towers, the tallest centrally placed and flanked by two smaller turrets, all surmounted by battlements, set within a plain inner circle. The castle, emblem of Castile, is rendered in the characteristic flat, schematic style of late medieval Castilian hammered coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the inner circle, reading: + ENRICVS : REX : CASTE, with the terminal letters partially off-flan due to the irregular flan. The field shows typical billon patination with a blue-grey surface consistent with the period.
