Obverse description Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms, consisting of the escutcheon of Portugal (five bezants arranged in a cross on a white field, bordered by castles) surmounted by a royal crown. The shield is rendered in low relief typical of hammered copper coinage of the period, with a circular legend surrounding the armorial device in the outer field. The overall design follows the standard heraldic typology employed at the Goa mint under Philip II (Felipe II of Portugal).
