Additional information

Klippe coinage — struck square rather than round — was produced in Zürich during the sixteenth century both for ordinary circulation and as presentation pieces, though the line between the two was often blurred in Swiss cantonal practice. This piece's weight at 2½ Batzen places it in an awkward denomination that saw limited long-term use, which partly explains the rarity of surviving examples. Winter Kl#20a is among the more elusive entries in the series.
