Obverse description Central shield bearing the rampant bear of Appenzell, depicted in profile facing left with raised forepaws, rendered in baroque style and flanked by decorative scrollwork volutes. The shield is of pointed form with the bear occupying the full field. The circumferential Latin legend reads MONETA REIP. APPENZELLENSIS, separated at the base by two small star ornaments. A beaded inner border separates the central device from the legend, and the coin exhibits a reeded outer rim.
