Obverse description Central field displays the ornate arms of Obwalden — a key device rendered in a stylized, floriate manner — surrounded by a beaded inner border. The circumferential Latin legend MONETA REIP. SVBSYLVANIÆ SVPERIORIS runs along the outer rim, identifying the issuing republic. The die work reflects the modest but characteristic provincial style of early eighteenth-century Swiss cantonal coinage.

Additional information

Obwalden was one of the smallest of the Swiss Forest Cantons, and its independent coinage output was correspondingly modest — this issue represents one of the few occasions the canton struck its own fractional billon coinage rather than relying on circulating issues from Lucerne or Schwyz. The three-year window of production suggests a specific local monetary shortfall rather than a sustained program.
