| Obverse description | Within a beaded border, the crowned Portuguese royal arms shield occupies the central field, displaying the characteristic arrangement of quinas (five escutcheons) and castles. The crown above the shield is rendered in a stylized heraldic manner typical of 16th-century hammered coinage. To the left and right of the shield appear the mint-mark letters G and A, denoting the Goa mint. The overall design reflects the crude but bold die-cutting style characteristic of Portuguese Indian hammered silver issues of the reign of Sebastião I. |
