Reverse description Central field displays the Portuguese royal arms: a large cross pattée dividing the field into four quarters, with each quarter containing a castle tower, and five shields arranged in cross formation at the centre, each bearing five bezants (quinas), all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The design is characteristic of the Gothic heraldic style used on Fernando I coinage. The outer legend reads: FERNANDVS : REX : PORTVG : ET, with numerous lettering variations recorded across the emission.
